Looks Like Canada 6: Avro Arrow

The Avro Arrow or CF-105 was a Canadian built and designed 1950s era jet fighter, it was one of the fastest aircraft of its day. Scrapped before it could be fully produced, the Arrow has become an important part of Canadian history and the Canadian cultural identity.

A commemorative full-scale model of the Avro Arrow is now on display at the Toronto Aerospace Museum.

(Podcast correction: In the show I mentioned that the Arrow replica is at the Aviation Museum in Ottawa. It is actually on display at the Toronto Aerospace Museum.)

Looks Like Canada 5: The Shag Harbour UFO Incident

On the evening of October 4th, 1967, many people witnessed an unidentified object crash into the water at Shag Harbour, Nova Scotia. This is one of the few cases where official government documents actually reported a possible UFO. Whether or not you believe in UFOs, this is a fascinating tale and piece of Canadian history.

Shag Harbour, Nova Scotia is a very small fishing community.

People around the world love summer festivals. Canadians are no exception. In this episode, I take a look at some of the most popular and some of the strangest festivals that take place every summer in Canada.

Here is some footage I took last year of a rural festival outside of Osaka, Japan. Although this one is a Fall Harvest festival, it gives you an idea of how interesting a Japanese festival can be!

Looks Like Canada Episode Three: The Most Haunted Building in Canada?

In Episode Three of Looks Like Canada we look at the Carleton County Gaol, otherwise known as the Old Ottawa Jail. Today, a youth hostel, the Ottawa Jail served as the main prison for the city of Ottawa for more than 100 years. Many people say that this structure, built in 1862, is one of Canada's most haunted buildings.

The Old Ottawa Jail located on Nicholas Street in downtown Ottawa (Canada's Capital city).

Today, the former Carleton County Gaol is now an international youth hostel.

The back courtyard area of the Ottawa Jail. The arch covered with wood you can see at the back was the gallows. The Old Ottawa Jail is located next to the University of Ottawa campus.

Now a youth hostel, the facilities have been converted to ensure a comfortable and interesting environment for travelers.

Many countries and cultures around the world have specialty food dishes that they connect with their culture. Food can act as part of a country or culture's identity. For Canadians, poutine is one such food. What is poutine? Let's take a look at a food many Canadians love.

An example of Quebec poutine. Mozerella cheese isn't used on true poutine. Fresh cheese curds are

the cheese of choice.

Fast food style poutine. this poutine is from Harvey's, a major Canadian fast food chain.
